Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive, irreversible brain disorder with no known cause or cure. It attacks the essence of an individual, leaving the body intact while it destroys the mind. There are about 4.5 million Americans suffering from AD. The disease usually begins after age 60, and risk goes up with age. Approximately 5% of Americans between ages of 65 to 74, and almost half of those 85 years and older suffer from AD. However, it is important to note that AD is not a normal part of aging.
The images below represent a cross-section of the brain as seen from the front. The image on the left represents a brain from a normal individual and the one on the right represents a brain with Alzheimer's disease.
